Neck Liposuction Procedure Overview

Excess fat around the neck is not a flattering look. In fact, a “double chin” or an accumulation of fatty tissue above the collarbone can dramatically change an individual’s appearance. For individuals looking for a sleek, toned neck, neck liposuction may be the best treatment option.

A neck lipo procedure extracts any excess fat, helping patients improve the appearance of their jawline and neck. Dr. Leo Lapuerta, an acclaimed triple-board-certified plastic surgeon, has over 20 years of experience providing patients with neck liposuction in Houston, Pearland, and Katy, Texas.

What is Neck Liposuction?

When fat resides in the neck, it can often give an individual a “double chin” appearance. Dr. Lapuerta uses neck liposuction to help patients achieve a sleeker, more defined neck. Liposuction has the ability to garner excellent improvements to the appearance of the neck and profile.

Neck liposuction is a surgery that is often paired with other procedures in order to help patients get the best possible results. Individuals with loose and sagging skin may want to combine neck lipo with a neck lift. In addition, patients born with limited bone support may want to consider a chin implant or genioplasty. Dr. Lapuerta also offers Kybella® as an alternative non-surgical approach to neck liposuction. During the initial consultation, the appropriate assessments will be made to gain insight as to whether neck liposuction will be enough to attain the desired results.

Neck Liposuction Candidates

The ideal candidate for neck lipo is anyone who feels that they have excessive fat, skin, and tissue in the area surrounding the neck, and want to improve the appearance of their neck. Patients should also be in good overall health, with no conditions or diseases that may make surgery dangerous.

All neck liposuction candidates need to have realistic expectations regarding the results of the procedure. During a consultation with Dr. Lapuerta, he will clearly communicate with the patient exactly what to expect, explaining in a down-to-earth fashion the treatment plan. Prior to surgery, the patient should make sure to ask Dr. Lapuerta any questions or voice any reservations they have to make sure they go into surgery fully aware of what is to come.

Neck Liposuction Surgical Technique

During liposuction, a small incision will be made just below the chin and excess fat will be removed from the neck through a cannula. Most surgeons prefer to use the tumescent (“superwet”) liposuction technique. During this approach, a liquid made up of saline, a numbing agent, and a substance that controls bleeding will be injected. All incisions are strategically executed to minimize scarring, and in most cases, any scars stemming from neck liposuction will be in an area that is hard to see as the scar fades.

Neck Lift and Liposuction Combination Procedure

This procedure may be a stand-alone procedure but, in most cases, it is used in unison with the neck lift. Once the fat has been removed from the neck, incisions are made under the chin and near the ears to allow the surgeon access to the neck muscles. At this time, the muscles will be pulled tight and the overlying skin will be stretched and re-draped over the neck so the desired definition and contour is attained. A drain may be placed under the skin to help collect fluid and blood, but this drain is usually removed within 24-48 hours. If a combination procedure is taking place, such as a facelift, then the neck lift will most likely occur after the facelift has been completed.

What to Expect During Neck Liposuction

All neck liposuction procedures are performed in an accredited surgical facility under general anesthesia. Dr. Lapuerta has an on-site accredited operating room and surgical facility, giving patients a convenient location to undergo surgery. To minimize discomfort, patients will be given oral pain medication and/or a numbing agent, as Dr. Lapuerta always strives for the patient to be as comfortable as possible. The entire procedure generally takes close to an hour to complete.

Neck Liposuction Recovery

Following surgery, patients will wear a compression garment to control swelling. This compression garment is usually a head sleeve or chin strap, and patients will be asked to wear it during the first week of neck liposuction recovery. There may be some bruising or swelling around the neck, but it should subside fairly quickly.

The patient should not feel much discomfort during neck liposuction recovery, but if the patient is in pain then medications will be taken to treat the discomfort. Most patients are able to return to work two to three days after the procedure, although everyone heals at a different pace. We recommend that patients wait a few weeks before they return to the gym or perform other strenuous activities.

Patients who have a combined surgery of neck liposuction plus a lift will have a longer recovery period. During the first follow-up visit, when all bandages are removed, patients will be able to see the results immediately.

Expected Neck Liposuction Cost

The expected neck liposuction cost will vary. Every patient comes in with different aesthetic goals, and the treatment plan Dr. Lapuerta decides on will be based on how drastic a change the patient is looking for. On average, patients can expect to pay between $2,000-$3,500 with additional cost if any accompanying surgeries took place. The best way to get an accurate neck liposuction cost estimate is to visit Dr. Lapuerta for a consultation. During the consultation, Dr. Lapuerta will thoroughly inspect the patient’s neck and intently listen to their aesthetic goals. Once he has all of the facts, Dr. Lapuerta will devise a treatment plan that best suits the patient’s needs, explaining each step of the process to the patient. When a treatment plan is agreed upon, an updated and accurate neck liposuction cost estimate can be made.

NECK LIPOSUCTION FAQS

WILL I HAVE A SCAR?
Scarring with liposuction is very minimal. The incisions will range from keyhole punch marks to very small lines and usually are not an issue with this procedure.
SMALL AMOUNTS OF FAT?
Liposuction removes both small and large amounts of fat. Patients that have a small, yet distinct bulge residing just under the chin will benefit greatly from this procedure. The removal of this fatty bulge should be fairly straightforward.
DOES THE FAT COME BACK??
The fat cells removed during liposuction do not come back. However, patients that gain weight after surgery are at risk of regaining fat because the remaining cells left behind can expand and become larger. Patients that adhere to a healthy diet and exercise program will continue to see results years after their surgery.
