Pregnancy changes the abdominal wall and the breasts in ways that returning to your pre-pregnancy weight does not reverse. The rectus muscles separate. The skin stretches past the point where it will retract. Breast tissue loses volume in the upper pole after nursing, and the skin envelope stays the size it was.
A mommy makeover addresses those changes in one operation. Here is who it fits, what it includes, and what the recovery actually asks of you.
There is no fixed procedure list. Dr. Lapuerta builds each plan around what pregnancy changed for that patient. Most plans draw from:
The most common combination in our practice pairs a tummy tuck with liposuction and some form of breast surgery. Dr. Lapuerta will tell you at consultation whether you need a lift, an implant, or both, and the answer usually surprises patients who came in certain of one.
Four conditions, and the order matters.
You are done having children. Pregnancy after a mommy makeover will stretch the muscle repair and the skin again. It is not dangerous, but it undoes the abdominal work and most patients want a revision afterward.
You have finished breastfeeding, ideally three to six months out. Breast volume and shape continue changing during that window, and operating before things settle means operating on a shape that will not hold.
Your weight has been stable for at least three months. Within 15 pounds of your goal is the practical threshold. Losing 30 pounds after a tummy tuck creates new loose skin.
You have the recovery covered. This is the condition patients most often underestimate, and it is the one that determines how the result heals.
Week one. You will be sore, moving slowly, and sleeping propped up with your knees bent to take tension off the abdominal repair. Drains, if placed, usually come out during this week. You need someone with you for the first several days, and you cannot lift your children.
Week two. Bruising fades. You can walk further and stand straighter. Many patients stop prescription pain medication in this window. Desk work becomes possible near the end of the week for some patients, though most take the full two weeks.
Weeks three and four. Energy returns. Swelling is still present and will remain the last thing to resolve. You are back to normal daily routines with restrictions still in place: nothing over ten pounds, no core work, no lifting toddlers.
Weeks five and six. Dr. Lapuerta clears most patients for full activity somewhere in this window. That clearance is based on your healing, not on the calendar.
Months three to six. Swelling continues to settle and the abdominal contour keeps refining. Scars go through their red and raised phase during this period, then begin to fade. Final results take a year.
No lifting over ten pounds for six weeks is the hardest instruction for mothers of young children, and it is the one Dr. Lapuerta will not soften. The sutures repairing your abdominal wall need six weeks to hold. Lifting a 30-pound three-year-old at week two can disrupt that repair, and repairing it again means a second operation.
Plan for this before you schedule. Line up help. Talk to your children about it in advance. Patients who arrange coverage recover without incident; patients who assume they will manage are the ones who call the office worried.
Pricing depends on which procedures are combined, how long the operation runs, and the anesthesia and facility involved. Combining procedures raises the total but lowers the per-procedure cost, since you pay anesthesia and facility once.
Two things to check on any quote. Dr. Lapuerta owns and operates a QuadA accredited surgical facility, and every case uses a physician anesthesiologist rather than a nurse anesthetist or anesthesia assistant. Those raise the price and change who is managing your anesthesia across a multi-hour combined operation. Patient financing is available and our coordinators will review the options with you.
